Illustrating for Fold
I've been lucky to work with Fold for the last couple of years, helping to add 3d illustration and character design to their brand. Fold is a personal finance app focused on Bitcoin. I can break my work with them so far into two parts:
Fold v1
Initially, I was asked to help inject a more friendly and playful feel into the brand. Bitcoin and its community are, relatively speaking, a modern phenomenon that blends modern internet meme culture with a certain level of complexity in understanding exactly what Bitcoin is and does.

Using 3d-illustrated scenes and a new robot helper character—nicknamed 'Stacky' after the stacks of coins users like to save—we set out to help users and potential sign-ups grasp key concepts, such as buying Bitcoin on the app, savings (or round-ups), and gamified features like the daily spin wheel.

Fold v2
In the summer of 2024, they underwent a rebrand, marking Fold’s shift toward a more serious position in the banking and financial sector. As a result, we moved away from the previously playful look, adopting a hyper-realistic style that conveys reliability and security.

This new approach incorporates real-world materials like glass and plastic while still nodding to Fold’s more lighthearted history. Shout out to the brilliant creative direction from bothRachel Mersky and latterly Lee Gordon.

I love working in 3d, experimenting with new techniques and materials, all while being part of one of the most exciting spaces on the internet. More to come!
